There are many things to consider when searching for an Indianapolis Jiu Jitsu academy to start training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu at. If you are new to the sport, it can be difficult to know what to look for when deciding which school is right for you. This article will go over some of the things to keep in mind and questions to ask while finding an Indianapolis Jiu Jitsu academy to train at.

Experience of Instructor:
Probably one of the most important things to consider is the experience, accomplishments and certifications of your instructor. The pricing in the Indianapolis area for training Jiu Jitsu is fairly similar, so doesn’t it make sense to learn from the best instructor you can?

Find out who the instructor received their black belt directly from and do some research on that person. Ask the instructor if they have ever won any big tournaments or if they produced champions. If MMA is your thing, see if they have trained or worked with any higher-level fighters.

Atmosphere:
After the experience of the instructor, the atmosphere of the academy is the second most important thing to consider when picking out an Indianapolis Jiu Jitsu academy to train at. It’s really important that you enjoy the energy of the classes, personalities of the other people and instructors and generally feel comfortable there.

Most people end up training at the same gym for years, so it’s important to pick one that you feel very comfortable and welcomed at.

Quality of Facility:
The quality and cleanliness of the facility is an important part to selecting an Indianapolis Jiu Jitsu academy to train at. Take some time to research the academy online, but also stop in and see what the place looks like for yourself.

Do they have quality equipment and mats? Is there a safe place for you to put your personal items? Does it appear that keeping the facility clean is a priority for this academy?

Class Schedule:
Lastly, take a look at their class schedule and compare it to your schedule. Keep in mind, the class schedule is not be tailored just for you, so it is common for people to have to work their schedules around a bit to make everything work. But it is important that they offer classes in the general time slots you’d like to train at.

Some good things to consider are: Do they offer any classes for your kids or spouse? Are there morning classes? What is their policy about open gyms and private lessons?

These are just a few of the things to keep in mind when selecting which Indianapolis Jiu Jitsu academy is right for you. Ultimately I would suggest looking for the most creditable and accomplished instructor and an atmosphere that is welcoming and fun. From my years of experience, these have always been the two most important factors for me.
