Beat the Winter Blues with Jiu Jitsu

Cold weather is here, and that has an effect on us all. The darkness and chill make it more difficult to get up in the morning out of our warm beds. People are less likely to want to get out in the evenings; they would rather watch television or partake in some other time-burglary hobby. Exercise and other healthy activities often fall by the wayside for a few months. Here we are already three weeks into February and for many folks the New Year’s resolutions are already a distant memory.

Gym owners, including Marcello Monteiro Indianapolis Jiu Jitsu Coach, saw a quick spike in membership and attendance that has already plateaued. It will increase again around mid-April or the first of May as people are scrambling to get their “beach bodies” ready for summer observation. I’m not knocking that, it is better than no exercise at all. I find that to be a pure and acceptable motive as well. But it is known that consistency does the best job, that slow and steady win the race. Few people have the time, energy, and wherewithal to exercise or train year round. That is why there will always be room at the top.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a fun hobby and a great exercise but it is also competitive. The people who don’t like the competitive aspect of BJJ may be better off just doing the stair climber everyday (though I have noticed many of those machines vacant at the fitness center this year as well). It gets cold in Indianapolis, IN during this time of the year. It’s hard to stay motived. There are still Christmas toys that are yet to completely lose their luster! However, I would encourage everyone to do something positive for themselves and get some exercise. Get a jump on those vacation bodies. If you participate in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, now is definitely not the time to ease up. There is an old business saying, ‘If we don’t do it, the competition will.’ In the case of jiu jitsu as well as impressive bodies, the competition is working hard this winter, are you?

This piece is intended to be motivational. As with all of my blogs, the purpose is to encourage the reader to be as healthy, happy, positive, and safe as possible. In addition, the site this is published to, BJJCoach.com , is specifically affiliated with Professor Marcello Monteiro, and being on his team is something to be proud of, a brand to take pride in. In the timeless words of modern-day philosopher Snoop Dogg, you have to “pay the cost to be the boss.” That includes the winter season; we need to always stay sharp. So let’s shed those extra holiday pounds with some exercise, and go enroll in Marcello’s BJJ Coach Academy on Emerson Ave. in Indianapolis. That way you can be fit and tough, both physically and mentally. Come join a team that will encourage you, keep you accountable, and embrace you into the community. The stair climber at the fitness center won’t do those things for you!
